Permanent workshop
creative process

4–5 July
Biblioteca ex-Salesiani +
Polo Le Benedettine, Aula D

The first event of the permanent workshop “Creative Process” will take place on Thursday, July 4 and Friday, July 5 in the Università di Pisa’s Sala Sant’Eufrasia, in the Biblioteca Ex-Salesiani. The workshop is also the first of the initiatives organized by Polit(t)ico Research LAB, a platform for interdisciplinary research that focuses on the relationship between theories of architecture, the sciences, and the arts, directed by Lina Malfona.

The workshop will be led by Pascal Schwaighofer, a Zurich-based artist currently carrying out research at Cornell University’s department of comparative literature in Ithaca, New York. Schwaighofer will take the name of the research lab as his starting point, working with students on the etymologies of the word “polittico.” Special attention will be paid to Masaccio’s "Polittico di Pisa", originally painted for Pisa’s Chiesa del Carmine; today, parts of the work are distributed among various museums, and the rest has disappeared. Interdisciplinary methodologies will be employed to focus on the practical, political, and speculative implications of a work’s dismemberment, and concepts like multitudes, networks, and swarm theory will be called upon in relation to Schwaighofer’s essay “Honey Ties.” The workshop consists of a series of thematic seminars, collegial discussions, and afternoons spent working in different locations around the Università di Pisa.

The final event will be a talk, open to the public, with discussants Marco Brizzi (California State University), Giovanni Corbellini (Politecnico di Torino), and Valter Scelsi (Università di Genova). The workshop is open to university students and doctoral candidates who might be interested in taking part in a theoretical, speculative experience, regardless of disciplinary background.

The workshop has limited access and selection is by curriculum. Registrations are open until 1 July 2019. Interested students and PhD students can send an email to polittico@unipi.it Selected students will be contacted by 2 July 2019.
